The Aquarium of the Pacific has announced the appointment of Dr. Peter Kareiva as its new president and CEO beginning on August 1, 2020. Current President and CEO Dr. Jerry R. Schubel will retire from the Aquarium on July 31, 2020.

On June 8, World Ocean Day, the Aquarium announced a new scholarship. The Aquarium’s Board Chair Kathleen Eckert made the announcement in a video.

The new program includes both on-demand videos and activities for all ages and a schedule of interactive live programs with Aquarium educators.

There are several ways to visit with discounted admission, plus festivals and arts events, and environmental education opportunities.

Beyond its world-class exhibits, the Aquarium of the Pacific has extensive programming that educates and inspires people of all ages, connects science and the arts, gathers experts to tackle the planet’s biggest environmental problems, and conserves endangered animals and threatened ecosystems.

With the opening of Pacific Visions and other accomplishments in ocean conservation and educational offerings, 2019 was a significant year in the Aquarium’s history.

As part of California’s annual Coastal Clean-Up Day, the Aquarium hosted a beach clean-up on the Long Beach Peninsula on September 21, 2019.

Dr. Schubel joined the Aquarium in 2002. He will remain in his current role while the Aquarium’s Board of Directors conducts a search for his replacement.
