The largest animal to ever have lived on Earth, the blue whale is massive in size and visits the waters off California each year to feed. There are about 2,000 blue whales estimated to be the Southern California region. The Aquarium aims to educate the public about the conservation issues surrounding this endangered whale species. During this season’s kick-off cruise, experts from the Aquarium’s blue whale photo ID program discussed the seasonal arrival of Southern California’s endangered blue whales and explained how Aquarium experts can identify individual whales that are frequenting local waters.

Harbor Breeze Cruises and the Aquarium have begun their blue whale watch season with trips offered daily at noon and 3:30 p.m. out of Long Beach, and trips are also offered out of San Pedro. These whale watches give guests a chance to witness the largest animal on Earth in its natural habitat. They also help Aquarium staff members conduct the blue whale photo ID program.
