The Aquarium of the Pacific has been honored with a special award from a long-time community partner. Mujeres de la Tierra, an environmental equity non-profit based in Los Angeles, presented its Unity & Partnership Award to the Aquarium on October 25, 2025.
“Respect, a shared vision of healing La Madre Tierra, and a love of and for community has strengthened and unfolded a powerful and enduring partnership between Mujeres de la Tierra and the Aquarium of the Pacific,” said Irma Muñoz, Mujeres de la Tierra founder, president, and CEO.
Mujeres de la Tierra presented the Aquarium with the award during its Día de los Muertos fundraiser at the Los Angeles River Center & Gardens. This award honors the “leadership, commitment, and courageous actions to help heal la Madre Tierra.” “In 2013, the Aquarium initiated the beginnings of what is now an alliance to educate, inspire, and entertain multigenerational Latino communities on ocean life on the importance of the ocean and how to protect it,” said Muñoz.
Mujeres de la Tierra and the Aquarium have collaborated on each other’s cultural events with educational programming in English and Spanish. This has included our annual Baja Splash Cultural Festival and Noche de Estrellas (Night of the Stars), and Mujeres de la Tierra’s Día de los Muertos community event.
Most recently, the Aquarium and Mujeres de la Tierra collaborated on a new program called “Vamos al Acuario” (Let’s Go to the Aquarium), which connects community members with the ocean through hands-on learning, marine life exploration, and environmental awareness at the Aquarium. This year, the program hosted a multicultural senior group in the summer and a multigenerational group who visited the Aquarium during this year’s Baja Splash Cultural Festival in September.
The Unity & Partnership Award from Mujeres de la Tierra is a reminder of the power of partnership in connecting people with nature and each other. The Aquarium’s vision is to foster an inclusive community that works together to create our sustainable future, and we are grateful for Mujeres de la Tierra’s role in this journey.
