California Community Science Symposium
The Aquarium of the Pacific invites you to join us for the 5th California Community Science Symposium on Saturday, October 25, 2025.
Credit: USC Sea Grant
Inspiring science participation in local communities, the symposium will connect people to nature, showcase experience with data collection, and provide options for ongoing participation as community scientists. In other words, we invite you to jump in—no previous experience or training is necessary.
Learn from key presenters- professional scientists, educators, and volunteers will share diverse volunteer opportunities and learning in conservation fields. Helped by technological tools, like apps and tracking databases, volunteers hear how they can easily record and submit data about local species from home or online as part of a team of community scientists (formerly known as citizen scientists). Attendees will receive opportunities to connect with others and apply knowledge locally.
Previous organizations include the Aquarium of the Pacific; Catalina Marine Society; Pacific Marine Mammal Care Center; Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy; Scripps Institution of Oceanography; Southern California Sea Turtle Monitoring Project and USC Sea Grant.

About our Keynote Speaker:
Dan Robinette is the coastal program leader for Point Blue Conservation Science (www.pointblue.org). He currently leads research and monitoring programs along the California coast with much of his work focused on developing marine birds as indicators of ecosystem condition. His research projects include investigating marine bird use of coastal and nearshore habitats inside and outside of marine protected areas (MPAs), impacts of human disturbance on coastal habitat use by shorebirds and seabirds, benefits of dune restoration for threatened and endangered nesting birds, and impacts of climate change on the diet and reproductive success of endangered California least terns. Robinette served on the Science Advisory Team for the South Coast Study Region of the Marine Life Protection Act Initiative and the Beach and Surf Zone Ecosystem Conditions Assessment Working Group led by the California Ocean Science Trust. He currently serves on the California Least Tern Management Science Advisory Group, the Elegant Tern Task Force, the Montezuma Wetland Restoration Project Technical Review Team, and the Sanctuary Advisory Council for the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary.
