Can we make our coastal cities resilient to climate change, or are they doomed? How are sustainability and resilience related? In a four-week evening course beginning Tuesday, March 7, the Aquarium will bring together a slate of scientists and other experts to discuss making coastal cities resilient to the impacts of climate change. Attendees will learn about sea level rise, coastal flooding, and other factors resulting from climate change that are affecting coastal cities. The speakers will discuss how cities can pursue sustainability, how to minimize risk factors, and the role of cities in improving our environmental footprint.

Speakers will include Dr. Reinhard Flick from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography; Dr. Steve Gaines from the University of California, Santa Barbara; Dr. Peter Kareiva from the University of California, Los Angeles’ Institute of the Environment and Sustainability; John Keisler, director of Economic and Property Development for the City of Long Beach; Dr. Jerry Miller from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine; Jonathan Parfrey, executive director at Climate Resolve; and Dr. Jerry Schubel, Aquarium of the Pacific president and CEO.

Courses will be held Tuesdays, March 7, 14, 21 & 28, 2017, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Aquarium’s Premier Watershed Classroom.

Cost: $40 per person and $35 per Aquarium member. CEU credit through California State University, Long Beach, is available for an additional $10. Parking will be validated.
