Dr. Greg Rau discusses the unprecedented nature and magnitude of the stresses the ocean now faces, some new approaches to avoiding or lessening the impacts, and the need for policies that support the emergence, evaluation, and development of new marine and planetary management strategies.

Rau is a senior research scientist at the Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
