Safety and Emergency Preparedness Manager

Full Time/ Eligible for Benefits

Minimum starting pay for this role is $85,000 annually. Additional consideration will be given, depending on relevant qualifications and experience.

The Manager, Safety and Emergency Preparedness ensures the comprehensive safety of the Aquarium. This position is responsible for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety protocols, emergency response plans, and risk management strategies. The ideal candidate will work closely with internal departments, local emergency services, and external partners to promote a safe environment. This position partners closely with the Aquarium security and operations teams.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Safety Protocol Development: Design and implement robust safety and safety protocols and procedures, including record keeping and incident investigation and reporting, ensuring alignment with industry best practices and compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Emergency Preparedness Planning: Drive the development and management of emergency response preparedness and business continuity plans, incorporating NIMS protocol and structure. Form, train and lead an internal Emergency Operations Center Team.
  • Safety Measures: Work with the safety team to ensure continuous monitoring and quick response to potential emergency situations.
  • Training and Drills: Working with key internal and external partners, conduct comprehensive safety, safety, and emergency response training and drills for all staff, ensuring preparedness for a variety of scenarios.
  • Risk Assessment: Perform thorough risk assessments focusing on safety hazards, safety threats, and potential emergency situations, developing strategies to mitigate identified risks.
  • Compliance and Best Practices: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of laws, regulations, and best practices pertaining to safety and emergency management. Ensure all operations follow applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Incident Response and Management: Take a leadership role in the coordination and management of responses to safety incidents and emergency situations. Facilitate debriefings and after-action reviews to identify lessons learned and opportunities for improvement.
  • Budget Management: Develop and oversee the budget for safety and emergency preparedness initiatives, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.
  • Team Leadership: Mentor and develop a cross-functional team of safety and emergency preparedness professionals.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or abilities required.

  • Working knowledge of industry specific OSHA, Cal-OSHA and NIMS provisions and protocols.
  • Certified in CPR, First Aid, AED, Forklift, Fall Arrest, Respirator, SDS, Hazard Communications, etc.
  • Ability to develop and deliver safety and safety training on a multitude of topics.
  • Ability to influence and inspire safe work practices.
  • Experience with injury/illness investigation/root cause analysis/mitigation.
  • Experience with best safety and emergency preparation practices in public aquariums, hospitals, water treatment plants, or oil refineries.
  • Ability to identify hazards, including ergonomic risks.
  • Excellent time and project management ability.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to effectively lead cross functional teams.
  • Strong written, verbal and presentation skills, with proficiency in crisis communication.
  • Understanding of workers’ compensation system in CA
  • Ability to work beyond traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required by operational needs or emergency situations.
  • Excellent professional demeanor and communication skills
  • Ability to form positive and professional relationships with key internal stakeholders and local emergency management and first responding agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS in business management or safety management, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Professional certifications in safety or emergency management (e.g., CPP, PSP, CEM, ASP, CSP) preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in safety and emergency management roles, with a minimum of 3 years in a leadership position, preferably within a public venue, theme park, or similar high-traffic environment.
  • Expert knowledge of both safety principles and emergency management protocols.
  • Possess a valid CA driver’s license (minimum of 3 years driving experience)
