California Spiny Lobsters Finish Annual Molting

Adult lobsters molt once a year, usually in the fall months. This year the Aquarium’s lobsters began exhibiting signs of molting in late September and had completed the process by mid-November.

Penguins Stranded in Brazil Arrive at Aquarium of the Pacific

On April 7, the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach welcomed five rescued Magellanic penguins, becoming the first penguins in the Aquarium’s collections. Experts believe climate change may be causing Magellanic penguins to travel farther in search of food, stranding them outside their usual range.

In April one of the Aquarium of the Pacific’s five southern sea otters will travel north to Santa Cruz, California to participate in an auditory study. This study is being conducted by researchers at the Pinniped Cognition & Sensory Systems Laboratory based at the Long Marine Lab at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

March 16, 2011, Long Beach, CA—The Aquarium of the Pacific is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved animals, Miller the California sea lion. Miller was the fifth oldest male sea lion in any zoological institution and had recently “retired” to the Aquarium’s behind-the-scenes area for marine mammals.
