Credit: Kera Mathes

Kera Mathes spent the summer of 2016 at the San Juan Islands in the Pacific Northwest photographing whales and other wildlife as a naturalist. In her lecture, she will share her photographs and experiences studying the orcas that frequent this part of the Salish Sea, including what she learned about these whales’ social interactions and their current threats.

Mathes formerly served as the Aquarium’s boat programs manager and resident whale expert. During that time she initiated the Marine Mammal Photo ID internship and Citizen Science Whale ID program. Mathes earned a bachelor’s of science degree in marine and environmental science from Hampton University. She is currently working on her master’s degree in education at the University of Redlands.
