Dr. Laura Kingsford

Dr. Laura Kingsford is the dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (CNSM) at California State University, Long Beach. After receiving her Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Utah, she did postdoctoral research in molecular animal virology at the University of Virginia. Since joining the faculty at CSULB in 1980, she has served as chair of the Department of Biological Sciences for eight years and now as the dean of the college.

Her area of research is in virus-host cell interactions along with viral protein structure and function. The CNSM at CSULB is composed of departments of biological sciences, chemistry and biochemistry, geological sciences, physics and astronomy, mathematics and statistics, and science education. The Department of Biological Sciences offers one of the few B.S. degree programs in marine biology in the United States and the only one in the California State University system. The faculty members in marine biology are internationally recognized for marine science education and research.

Dr. Kingsford also serves on the board of directors for the CSU Ocean Studies Institute and the Southern California Marine Institute. She joined the MCRI Board of Directors at the Aquarium of the Pacific in 2004.
