We keep our sea lions, seals, and sea otters mentally stimulated by occasionally introducing various enrichments for them to experience. Did you know that we do the same for our sharks?
One thing I love about volunteering at the Aquarium of the Pacific is the new things I learn from the staff. Recently, Aquarist Rachel taught me that just like the marine mammals that I work with, the sharks under her care in Shark Lagoon also get various enrichments added to their environment.
Changing the substrate and rocks, mimicking cleaner fish, and even an occasional “boop” to the nose keeps the exhibit mentally stimulating for the sharks.
