Barrel Jelly

Rhizostoma pulmo

This jelly is typically 0.25 meters (10 inches) in diameter and approximately 2.5 kilograms (5.5 pounds) in weight. Their body color ranges from cream to off-white, to blue-white or brown. It has reddish or purple-brown grooves on its bell and thick appendages on each tentacle that are in the same color. They eat zooplankton, small fish, and crustaceans. This species is the only member of the jelly family Catostylidae that is found in Europe.
