Husbandry Keeper Internship

The Husbandry Keeper internship is an educational opportunity to gain introductory experience and learn practical skills in preparation for a career in the animal husbandry field.

In this program, selected candidates will learn about the daily care of our terrestrial and marine birds and our animal ambassadors. They will also gain valuable experience in delivering educational and conservation-based messages about our animals to the public. Our collection includes a large flock of rainbow lorikeets, Magellanic penguins, shorebirds, diving birds, parrots, reptiles, and small mammals. In the 15 weeks of this internship, candidates will participate in educational lectures put on by our staff, have the opportunity to participate in animal meet-and-greets utilizing our animal ambassadors, learn proper animal handling techniques, and exercise public speaking skills. This is a non-paid position.

Responsibilities:

  • Diet preparation and feeding
  • Enclosure cleaning and maintenance
  • Animal handling during public presentations
  • Animal observations and recording of animal/flock appearance and behaviors
  • Creation and utilization of animal enrichment
  • Learn about medical procedures and treatment
  • Development of public speaking skills through presentations and meet-and-greet interactions
  • Learning protocols for record keeping and documentation
  • Observe breeding pairs and chick rearing
  • Final project to be determined by candidate and intern coordinator 


Duration and Time Commitment:

  • 15 weeks from May-August (Summer Only)
    • Fall and spring internships are not offered at this time
  • 24 hours (three days) per week
  • 360 hour total time commitment 


Qualifications:

  • Must have an interest in pursuing a career in animal husbandry
  • Must be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a higher education facility
  • Some experience with public speaking and/or animal husbandry is desired, but not required
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Desire to fulfill our mission statement of instilling a sense of wonder, respect, and stewardship for the Pacific Ocean, its inhabitants, and ecosystems
