Program Animals Internship

The Aquarium of the Pacific has internship opportunities with our program animal collection. Interns will learn the daily care of our program animals, including different species of reptiles, birds, and arachnids. Interns will learn the daily care of our program animals, including different species of mammals, reptiles, birds, and arachnids. Through individual, hands-on training, interns will learn how to be responsible for daily food preparation and feeding, cleaning of exhibits and behind-the-scenes areas, and animal observation and record keeping. They will also learn how to handle the animals during public presentations, will learn valuable public-speaking skills during those presentations, and may assist in veterinary procedures for the animals.

These are non-paid positions.

Our program animal collection includes different species of arachnids, birds, snakes and other reptiles. We participate in a formal animal presentation and several informal “meet and greets” on a daily basis. There also may be opportunities to attend off-site events with the animals during the internship.


Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Some background experience with reptiles, birds, and arachnids is desirable, but not required.
  • Comfortable working with the above mentioned species.
  • Comfortable speaking in front of the public.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Willingness to get wet and dirty.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with staff and visitors alike.
  • Ability to work independently after sufficient training and experience.
  • Desire to fulfill our mission statement, of instilling a sense of wonder, respect, and stewardship of the Pacific Ocean, its inhabitants, and ecosystems. Requirements:
  • Minimum time commitment of 16 hours per week over a 15 week period (or a minimum of 240 hours).
  • Must complete our general orientation session, Aquarium 101.
  • Must attend continuing education sessions when applicable.
  • Must have an interest in pursuing a career in program animal husbandry and presentation.
  • Must be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a higher education facility.

Candidates will be selected on the basis of knowledge, abilities, experience, attitude, reliability, punctuality, and recommendations.
