Dive Safety Internship

The Aquarium of the Pacific has Dive Safety internship opportunities year round. These interns will be trained to provide daily support to the staff and volunteer divers above and below the water. Through hands-on training our interns will become competent in the care and maintenance of our dive equipment and learn to supervise and plan safe under water tasks to assist the Dive Safety Officers run daily dive operations. Dive Safety internships are non-paid positions.

Commitment/Requirements

  • Minimum time commitment of 16 hours a week over a 15 week period (or a minimum of 240 hours)
  • Must complete Aquarium 101 training
  • Must complete a background check
  • Must have a current CPR/AED/BFA certification (oxygen provider certification preferred as well)
  • Must have a current AAUS diving medical or be able to get one
  • Interest in pursuing a career in dive safety within marine science fields
  • Must be currently enrolled or recently graduated from a higher education facility

Responsibilities/Duties include:

  • Learn exhibit and scientific diving procedures
  • Learn to provide divers with required training
  • Learn how to maintain HIPA and training files
  • Learn basic boating operations
  • Learn the care and maintenance of aquarium dive equipment

Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge

  • Broad knowledge of safe diving practices, diving physics and physiology
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks
  • A minimum of a Rescue Diver certification from an internationally-recognized scuba certifying agency(AAUS Scientific Diver, Dive Master, or Instructor preferred)
  • Excellent watermanship skills
  • Must be able to pass an basic open water confined-water checkout
  • Must be able to swim a distance of 440 yards in 12 minutes or less
  • Must be able to carry 50 lbs on stairs, ladders and catwalks
