Iliff Infectious Enthusiasm Scholarship 2009

Applications due June 1.
Exact 3 dates from August 3 - 14 to be determined.

The Iliff Infectious Enthusiasm Scholarship is an endowment established to honor Warren Iliff’s, passion for education and conservation. Warren Iliff was the Aquarium of the Pacific’s founding president and CEO.

With this scholarship, we are able to take one teacher each year and spread enthusiasm and knowledge of the oceans. This program is offered to Title One school teachers only. For three days in August we will show this teacher a variety of ways to bring marine science into the classroom, engender an ongoing and lasting interest in marine science, and show how to use the Aquarium of the Pacific to its fullest potential. Each year’s teacher will receive:

  1. A toolkit containing a supply of bio-facts and posters for display, as well as a variety of standards based hands-on activities.
  2. Field trip experience to wetland habitats and/or local tidepools.
  3. Extensive tours of the Aquarium featuring encounters with animals.
  4. Round table discussions and shadowing opportunities with our Education Staff and Volunteers regarding teacher’s needs and Aquarium programs and resources.
  5. A scholarship opportunity to bring their class back to the Aquarium on a field trip.

One of the most exciting portions of the Iliff Infectious Scholarship is the continuing contact with the teachers and therefore their students throughout the year. Each year’s teacher will be able to share their experiences at the Aquarium with their students and talk about the important role people such as Warren Iliff have to encourage others to learn, grow, and explore. Each teacher’s students will have the opportunity to check in with ‘Ranger Headquarters’ when they have questions, or would like to share their experience either at school or with their families. After more years and more teachers participate in this program, students from different schools will be able to pen pal with each other to share their experiences.

The Aquarium hopes that this program will not only be of interest to teachers as a unique experience but will provide them with hands on, useful tools to use in their classroom as well as a theme they are able to use in many different lessons in order to share Warren’s enthusiasm with their students.
