Student Competition: Communication Strategy for U.S. Marine Aquaculture

Students are invited and encouraged to share ideas for a communication strategy for U.S. marine aquaculture based on information provided at a free forum at the Aquarium of the Pacific on October 4, 2018.

The Aquarium of the Pacific’s Seafood for the Future program and American Honda in partnership with the Honda Marine Science Foundation will host a forum, titled: Aligning Stakeholder Communications for U.S. Marine Aquaculture at the Aquarium of the Pacific on October 4, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The output will be a communications strategy to facilitate more cohesive and accurate messaging among diverse stakeholder groups about U.S. marine aquaculture in state and federal waters.

Students are encouraged to attend the forum and submit ideas for a communication strategy for a chance to:

  • Win cash prizes
  • Name recognition in the final published forum report
  • Learn about real-world applications of science communications for marine aquaculture and seafood
  • Engage with scientists, seafood farmers, chefs, seafood suppliers, and communication and marketing experts

DEADLINE:

OCTOBER 19, 2018
*NOTE: Attendance at the forum on October 4th is required for eligibility.

PRIZES

  • First place: $300 and name recognition in the published forum report
  • Second place: $100 and name recognition in the published forum report
  • Third place: 2 tickets to the Aquarium of the Pacific and name recognition in the forum report

RSVP - Required

Attendance at the forum on October 4, 2018 is required to enter the competition. Students must RSVP for the forum to Linda Brown at LBrown@lbaop.org by September 21, 2018. Lunch and parking will be provided.

Any of the guidelines not followed below may automatically disqualify you from participation in the contest.

FORMAT INSTRUCTIONS

Entries should not exceed 3 pages. Submitted strategies must be submitted in Word or PDF format and clearly address the following:

  • identify key stakeholder groups (Choose 1-3 stakeholder groups based on discussion at the forum).
  • identify key collaborations.
  • identify target audiences.
  • Identify tools and resources to meet communication goals for U.S. marine aquaculture as outlined by participants at the forum.
  • Summarize implementation strategies to meet the communication goals for U.S. marine aquaculture as outlined by participants at the forum.

Entries may be submitted by a team or individual.

NOTE: Applicants under 18 MUST submit a signed parental consent form.

ELIGIBILITY

Entrants must be 18 years of age or older OR have their parent or legal guardian sign the consent form to apply. Only entrants who RSVP and attend the forum on October 4, 2018 are eligible. Entries can be submitted by a team or individual. Submissions must meet the following specifications: Format instructions must be followed. File names are the submitting entrant’s last name (i.e. Jones.doc). Files should be sent in Word or PDF format. Entries should not exceed 3 pages. Failure to conform to these submission guidelines may result in instant disqualification.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

From 9:00 A.M. Pacific Standard Time on Thursday, October 4, 2018, through 6:00 P.M. Pacific Time on Friday, October 19, 2018, the Aquarium of the Pacific’s Seafood for the Future program will host the student competition to create a communication strategy for U.S. marine aquaculture. All entries must be no more than 3 pages and submitted in digital form. All entries will be judged by a panel of judges determined by the Aquarium. Winners will be notified by email no later than Friday, November 9, 2018. NO PURCHASE IS NECESSARY TO BE CONSIDERED. A PURCHASE DOES NOT IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING. All entrants must be at least 18 years of age OR have their parent or legal guardian sign the consent form. All entries that do not meet display specifications or file size requirements or are received after the deadline will be disqualified. Employees, volunteers, and board members of the Aquarium of the Pacific, American Honda, and the Honda Marine Foundation and their family/household members are not eligible. Prize is nontransferable and must be accepted as awarded. No substitution may be made, except by the Aquarium of the Pacific. All entrants give full rights to the Aquarium of the Pacific to promote and publish their name in conjunction with the contest. All entrants release the Aquarium of the Pacific, their affiliates, parents, subsidiaries, directors, officers, employees and agents, the City of Long Beach, and all others associated with the development and execution of this contest, from any and all liability from injury, loss or damage of any kind, including death, and property, due in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, resulting from participation in this promotion or acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any prize. Void where prohibited by law. All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply.
