December 2, 2020

WHAT: In a rapidly changing world, with people facing the pressures of climate change and impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, our connection with nature is more important than ever. On December 15 at 7:00 p.m. Aquarium of the Pacific President and CEO Dr. Peter Kareiva will present a virtual lecture examining this topic. According to Dr. Kareiva, with a more inclusive definition of nature and a commitment to giving everyone access to it, the label environmentalist might go extinct, and humans will all think of themselves of stewards of nature. He suggests that this would benefit everything from the preservation of wilderness to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It should be clear to everyone that it is “all hands on deck” in the next few years, or else “the deck” will be at the bottom of the ocean, Dr. Kareiva says. This virtual lecture will explore the importance of making nature more accessible to everyone and how nature-human interactions could hold the key to a better mental and emotional well-being. Viewers are encouraged to watch the lecture with their pets.

The virtual Guest Speaker Series is part of the Aquarium of the Pacific’s Online Academy, which offers free live and on-demand educational resources for both kids and adults.
