Aquarium to Host Free Event on Responding to Sea Level Rise in Long Beach

Local and international experts will discuss preserving homes and beaches, with a focus on Long Beach’s Peninsula, Belmont Shore, and Naples

September 23, 2019

The Aquarium of the Pacific will host a free community event on October 7, 2019, bringing scientists and researchers together to discuss coping with sea level rise with a focus on Long Beach’s Peninsula, Naples, and Belmont Shore. The event, cosponsored by the Aquarium and The Nature Conservancy, will be held in the Aquarium’s Ocean Theater from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

“Our goal is to explore strategies that will allow people to live in their homes in these areas as long as possible and to give Long Beach residents opportunities to visit some of the city’s best beaches in these areas for as long as possible,” Aquarium President and CEO Dr. Jerry Schubel said. “The discussion will also explore that if at some time in the future, managed retreat becomes necessary or desirable, how it can be executed with the least impact on homeowners.”

This presentation is part of an ongoing program on responding to sea level rise led by the Aquarium in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and the ArtCenter College of Design. Experts on the panel will include both local and international scholars, with two of the speakers coming from France’s University of Montpellier. The event’s speakers are Dr. Gary Griggs, distinguished professor of Earth sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz; Dr. Sylvain Barone, researcher in public policy at the University of Montpellier’s National Research Institute of Science and Technology for Environment and Agriculture; and Laura Michel, lecturer in political science and researcher at the University of Montpellier’s Center for Political Science and Sociology.
