California Sea Lion Makes Public Debut at Aquarium
October 4, 2007, Long Beach, Calif.—Odin, a blind California sea lion, joined fellow exhibit mates in the Seal & Sea Lion Habitat today. The two-year-old male was stranded and deemed non-releasable to the wild because he is almost completely blind and would starve in the ocean not being able to hunt for food. Because of this, the government was looking to find a home for this sea lion. The Aquarium of the Pacific volunteered to provide him with a home and was selected. After arriving at the Aquarium in June, Odin lived in a behind-the-scenes area for a standard quarantine period where he was deemed healthy and now ready to interact with staff and other animals in the exhibit. Aquarium members, Peri Marek and Peg Urvoas, selected Odin's name and also provided funding in support of Odin's arrival, care, and feeding.
