Peter Howorth - Wildlife Rescue
Marine Mammal Rescue and Conservation
An estimated 60,000 whales, dolphins, and porpoises are killed each year as a result of being entangled and drowned in gill nets.
The Santa Barbara Marine Mammal Center (SBMMC) works to free whales that are entangled in nets as well as to save those stranded on beaches. SBMMC also rescues seals, sea lions, and sea otters throughout Santa Barbara County. The organization conducts marine mammal rescue workshops throughout the United States and in other countries. Peter Howorth, founder and director of SBMMC, will talk about the center's 31 years of rescue and conservation efforts worldwide.
SBMMC holds an impressive record of saving about 90 per cent of the animals that it treats. In his talk, Howorth will share footage of SBMMC's innovative rescue techniques used for distressed marine mammals. Also learn how SBMMC has helped with marine mammal rescue and conservation in places as varied as Mexico, the Galapagos, and Japan. He will explain how events in other countries can impact the same marine mammals that inhabit our coast.
Howorth has worked extensively with marine mammals for over 40 years. He has published hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles, books, scientific papers, and environmental documents pertaining to marine mammals.
