Endangered Species Habitat Restoration Day

Give a Bird a Hand

You can help to save endangered birds from extinction by joining us for our Endangered Species Habitat Restoration Day (formerly known as Least Tern Habitat Restoration Day). Endangered California Least Terns (Sterna antillarum brownii) and California Light-footed Clapper Rails (Rallus longirostris levipe) as well as the declining Belding’s Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis) need your help.

Least terns nest in small colonies on beaches that are clear of vegetation, while savannah sparrows nest in upland scrub. Clapper rails make their homes on floating nests inside the marsh. It is important that we prepare their nesting areas for the breeding season, if their numbers are to increase sufficiently to remove their endangered species status. In the case of the clapper rail, we may be helping with the refurbishing of the artificial nests used in the refuge.
