As part of the Aquarium of the Pacific’s year-long 10th anniversary celebration, we will be featuring The Ocean on the Edge Lecture Series. The new series will feature prominent speakers to raise awareness on the top 10 pressing issues affecting our world ocean and all life on our planet.
Award-winning environmental writer Kenneth R. Weiss will kick off the series with his talk about the current state of the ocean. The talk will also highlight some of the key issues he addressed in Altered Oceans, his Pulitzer-Prize-winning Los Angeles Times series.
Covering stories on catch limits on fish and ocean pollutant levels prompted Weiss to think about the long-term health of the ocean. He was further inspired by scientific information describing a gradual but profound transformation of the world ocean, marked by the decline of fish and marine mammals and the proliferation of primitive forms such as algae, bacteria, and sea jellies. In 2005 Weiss began traveling around the world to begin reporting for the Altered Ocean series. Through his talk at the Aquarium, Weiss will share images and stories of those discoveries and will give an insider’s update on current ocean issues that are surfacing. The Altered Ocean series articles can be found at the Los Angeles Times web site.
