This Winter at the Aquarium

This Winter at the Aquarium
Penguin chicks Heidi and Anderson waddle around the June Keyes Penguin Habitat before entering the exhibit in September.

December 23, 2013

Winter is an exciting time to visit the Aquarium. With special events, engaging exhibits, and ongoing ocean exploration programs, there is plenty to see and do for visitors of all ages.

Check in on our animals that were born in early 2013 and see how they’re growing. Visit harbor seal pup Toby and his one-year-old sister Bixby in the Seals & Sea Lions Habitat.

Two Magellanic Penguin chicks that joined the rest of the penguins on public exhibit in September 2013 are integrating well with the flock. You can read more about the chicks on Hugh’s blog. You can distinguish the chicks, the female named Heidi and the male Anderson, from the rest of the penguins by their slightly lighter-colored feathers.

Special Holiday Late Nights will be offered on December 26, 27, 28, and 29. The entire Aquarium will be open, except Lorikeet Forest, until 8:30 p.m. Admission after 5:00 p.m. is just $14.95 for adults and seniors, and children (3-11). Please note that the Aquarium will be closed on Christmas Day, Wednesday, December 25.

Join us for the perfect event to keep the post-holiday blues at bay: the Aquarium’s Palm Springs Pool Party. This special event celebrating Long Beach’s LGBTQ community will feature drag performances by Raja, Tammie Brown, and Long Beach’s Jewels, DJs, free hors d’oeuvres, and mid-century modern pool décor.

The Aquarium will also be offering its Winter Day Camp for kids, January 2 to 4. Campers will learn about marine life through hands-on activities, games, and crafts. Participants will even get the chance to go behind-the-scenes at the Aquarium, meet our animal husbandry staff, and help us take care of some of the animals that make their home here at the Aquarium. Reservations are available by calling (562) 951-1630.

The ocean exploration programs continue at the Aquarium through the end of the year. These programs include films and shows played daily in the Great Hall, Ocean Theater, and Ocean Science Center, live feeds from exploration vessels at the Ocean Exploration Hub, the Wonders of the Deep gallery, and the new Explorer App for iPhone and Android devices.
