September 9, 2008

The Aquarium of the Pacific is pleased to announce Johnnie Alexis Eagan as its August 10th Anniversary Scholar. In celebration of its 10th anniversary, the Aquarium is honoring Long Beach students in the community who have shown outstanding efforts in the areas of science, environment, ocean science/marine biology, promoting cultural diversity, and exceptional community service. Ten award recipients will be honored between August 2008 and May 2009.

Eagan is an eleven-year-old honor student who has shown outstanding service to the local and global community as well as in inspiring conservation of the planet. Her work includes raising money through bake and garage sales for a well in Nigeria that now supports a school and 2000 children and families. She also raised money and supplies from throughout Long Beach for an orphanage in Ecuador. Locally she has donated her time to feed the homeless in Lynwood and Long Beach and at a center helping women and children of abuse in Los Angeles.

She has lent her artistic talent to create artwork that serves as an inspiration to conserve nature. She created a piece that won a regional award for the national Coastal America Art Contest. She also won an art contest by the Forestry Department on fire prevention in Sequoia National Park.

“The Aquarium of the Pacific is honored to present our first 10th Anniversary Scholar award to Johnnie Alexis Eagan. We are extremely impressed with her care and dedication to helping others and the planet. She serves as an inspiration to us all,” said Aquarium President & CEO Jerry Schubel.
