In collaboration with the Los Cerritos Wetlands Authority, California State University, Long Beach, and NOAA Fisheries, the Aquarium is conducting systematic citizen-led monitoring of the Pacific green sea turtles in the San Gabriel River.

The program received funding from the Marine Conservation Research Institute in June and will conduct the monitoring sessions October 2012 through September 2013. The first volunteer orientation took place at the Aquarium’s Watershed Classroom in August with more than fifty citizens in attendance.

Eighteen of the citizens participated in the first session, which took place on Saturday, October 6, with a total of twenty-seven green turtle sightings. The stations are filled through December and the next orientation will take place in February to recruit more volunteers for the spring and summer sessions.
