The Aquarium of the Pacific was among eleven aquariums to participate in the national Ocean Art Contest sponsored by the Coastal America Partnership (CAP) by submitting entries from the local community. Coastal America is an alliance of public and private organizations and federal, state, and local agencies that fosters resilient coasts and thriving coastal communities. Two of the submissions to the Aquarium’s regional contest went on to win at the national level: Natalie Carranza won first place in the Group 1 category, and Alyson Luca won first place in the Group 3 category.

The purpose of the contest is to enhance public awareness of the importance of the ocean and to convey how personal actions affect the ocean. Contestants entered at the regional level in one of the five age categories. A panel of ocean experts judged regional art from the eleven participating aquariums to determine a first-place winner for each of the five categories. Winners from each category were moved onto the national level of the competition.

The winning artwork will join a travelling exhibition that will be displayed at several of the participating learning centers during 2014 and 2015. In addition, each winner will receive a cash scholarship and commemorative plaque. The travelling exhibition and awards are made possible by donations from LGL Alaska Research Associates and the Gene Cope Memorial Fund.
