Each year Californians celebrate the state’s coastal environments with Coastweeks, an annual three-week public education program of the California Coastal Commission celebrating our coastal and water resources. The kick-off for the celebration is Coastal Cleanup Day, when 80,000 Californians come together to keep our coasts and inland waterways free of debris.
From September 17 through October 9 the Aquarium will join the celebration by hosting special presentations during the day in the new Ocean Science Center and hosting additional programs that highlight the treasures of our coastal ocean. The Aquarium invites the public to join the kick-off event for Coastweeks and help clean up Alamitos Beach on California Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 17. For details, click here. Additional highlighted events include a lecture by Lori Hargrove, Climate Change Impacts on Birds of Southern California, on Thursday, September 15. For details on this event, click here. The Aquarium will also be holding free Shark Lagoon Nights during Coastweeks. Click here for more information.
