Dr. Herman Karl
A Look at Science as a Community-building Tool
Dr. Herman Karl is a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientist and holds a faculty appointment as a Visiting Lecturer in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Herman Karl, a marine geologist and former chief scientist with the US Geologic Survey's Western Coastal and Marine Geology Program, is co-director of MUSIC—the Massachusetts Institute of Technology—USGS Science Impact Collaborative. Dr.Karl believes that to solve what he calls "wicked environmental problems," characterized by uncertainty and conflict such as the sudden and cumulative impacts of climate change, we need to integrate sound science with input from social scientists, political realities, and stakeholder concerns. In other words, we need to look at science as a community-building tool that leads to environmental-decision making.
