Thriving in the Anthropocene
The Aquarium the Pacific is hosting its 10th Annual Poetry Contest as part of the Urban Ocean Festival. Poems submitted must address the following theme: THRIVING IN THE ANTHROPOCENE.
We live in the Anthropocene, the geologic epoch in which for the first time humans have become a major global force. We are modifying the climate, making the ocean warmer and more acidic, and as a result taking a huge toll on marine life. We will be in the Anthropocene for as long as there are humans on Earth so we need to figure out how to live in greater harmony with the Earth. The choices we make for energy, food, and water are the most important. We need to move away from fossil fuels to clean energy—renewables like solar and wind combined with a more stable source of clean energy, nuclear. We need to eat more fruits and vegetables, more seafood, and less red meat. And, we need to conserve our water supply since we have the same amount of water we had on Earth 4 billion years ago, and it is the same water recycled millions of times through the hydrologic cycle.
