Sylvia Earle is an oceanographer, explorer, author, and lecturer with experience as a field research scientist. In her lecture at the Aquarium on June 18, 2013, she shared stories of exploration and discovery. Former chief scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Earle is founder of the Mission Blue Foundation, chair of the Advisory Council for the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, and an explorer-in-residence at the National Geographic Society. She has led more than sixty expeditions and logged more than 6,000 hours underwater.
