Lecture date: March 25, 2015. The topic of whales in captivity is one of great debate with passionate opinions and feelings on both sides. Hear two perspectives on this topic in a presentation at the Aquarium.
When the decision is made to release a whale back into the wild, there are difficult challenges in preparing the animal to survive on its own. In the case of Keiko, the orca who gained public attention from the film Free Willy, he was released into the wild but unfortunately did not survive. Hear about his story from the perspective of Mark Simmons, who was the director of animal husbandry who led the team that prepared the whale for release. After Simmons, Dr. Thomas White, the Conrad N. Hilton Chair of Business Ethics at Loyola Marymount University, presents an overall perspective on the issue of whales in captivity. The evening concluded with a Q&A with the speakers and members of the audience.
