What if, for every dollar you donated to the
Aquarium, we received two?

Many employers encourage employees to donate providing matching gifts that double or even triple the effect of individual donors.

Not only do these gifts support our programs and help us take care of our animal ambassadors, they are also tax-deductible.

Before you make a contribution to the Aquarium of the Pacific, ask your employer if they have a matching gift program, or click here to check your company’s matching gift policy online. This could potentially double the impact of your individual contribution!

If you have questions about matching gifts, or if you know of a company that would be interested in setting up a matching gift program with the Aquarium of the Pacific please call the Development Office at (562) 951-5341.

The Aquarium of the Pacific’s education programs expose children of all backgrounds and circumstances to critical science learning experiences to assist them in becoming successful and contributing citizens of our community. The programs also increase student achievement in STEM subjects, and help teachers build student enthusiasm for overall learning.

Educating the public about science and marine conservation is one of the Aquarium’s main priorities. Over 200,000 students annually participate in our educational programs and the number continues to grow. In order to ensure all students are exposed to our high-quality programming the Aquarium has a scholarship fund designed to sponsor the visits of students from schools that do not have the financial resources to attend or pay for transportation.

Ocean Science Education Program

The Ocean Science Education Program supports the entire K-12 program at the Aquarium, including more than 40 classroom and auditorium programs. Aquarium lessons are based on California science standards and serve more than 200,000 students and teachers annually. For classes that cannot attend, the Aquarium on Wheels, our mobile outreach unit, is a viable option as it is equipped with a touch pool and lessons are presented off-site.

Aquarium Scholarship Fund

The Aquarium Scholarship Fund was created to address the needs of Title I schools that are not financially equipped to visit the Aquarium. Regardless of proximity of the Pacific Ocean many students have never actually seen it or experienced any type of marine education. In response to this inequity, the Aquarium is delighted to sponsor classes that could otherwise not afford to visit. To ensure the Scholarship Fund remains a sustainable program the Aquarium depends heavily upon contributions from corporations and foundations that share the common goal of promoting science education among low income, under-served communities.

The Aquarium of the Pacific’s education programs expose children of all backgrounds and circumstances to critical science learning experiences to assist them in becoming successful and contributing citizens of our community. The programs also increase student achievement in STEM subjects, and help teachers build student enthusiasm for overall learning.

The Aquarium of the Pacific is much more than an Aquarium. It is a research institution dedicated to the conservation and research of threatened species and habitats.

Led by a strategic plan designed by the Board of Directors and Aquarium staff, the Aquarium is in a unique position to take a leading role in promoting environmental and ocean literacy.

Support current conservation programs today by contributing a tax-deductible gift which will fund…

Abalone Rearing and Breeding
Abalone Rearing and BreedingThe Aquarium of the Pacific is partnering with NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the California Department of Fish and Game in efforts to improve abalone populations in Southern California as deemed necessary under the NMFS Final White Abalone Recovery Plan (2008). To support these efforts, the Aquarium is refining captive abalone rearing and cultivation techniques for red abalone (Haliotis rufescens) and white abalone (Haliotis sorenseni), has completed a certification process that ensures our abalone facility is disease-free, and has created a multi-faceted education and outreach program to engage and inform our 1.4 million annual visitors and thousands of underserved students of the ecological and economic importance of these valuable marine invertebrates. This project ultimately lays the groundwork for the Aquarium to play an active role in abalone recovery, and take the lead in providing creative and effective educational programs focused on species conservation.
Kelp Restoration in Orange County, California
Kelp Restoration in Orange CountyGiant kelp forests are one of the most productive and dynamic ecosystems in the world, and more than 800 species rely on them for food and shelter including many species of fishes, lobsters, abalone, sea urchins, and marine mammals. This project has managed by the Aquarium of the Pacific since 2007, with the goal of improving and sustaining Orange County’s near-shore coastal wildlife through the restoration and ongoing underwater monitoring of over 2 acres of historical kelp beds. Volunteer Aquarium divers conduct sea urchin relocation (a major predator of kelp) and underwater observations using the ReefCheck monitoring protocol to determine the presence and density of key species.
Micronesian Kingfisher Breeding and Education
Micronesian KingfisherThe Aquarium is currently working along with other zoos and aquariums to help restore the population of this highly endangered species, which is currently extinct in the wild. Only about 100 birds (housed in 17 different facilities) currently exist, which were rescued after populations in their native Guam were devastated by the non-native brown tree snake. The Aquarium is participating in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Species Survival Plan, and plans to build a habitat and educational exhibit to house a breeding pair of these birds, which will produce additional birds for eventual relocation into the wild.

The Aquarium of the Pacific’s education programs expose children of all backgrounds and circumstances to critical science learning experiences to assist them in becoming successful and contributing citizens of our community. The programs also increase student achievement in STEM subjects, and help teachers build student enthusiasm for overall learning.

Did you know that only 80% of funds necessary to sustain the Aquarium’s operating budget and education and conservation programs come from admission and retail sales? In order to secure the remaining 20% we rely on the generous support of our institutional partners.

Contributions from corporations and foundations are essential to ensuring the Aquarium continues to engage, educate, and empower the next generation of Pacific Ocean stewards.

Did you know…

  • 140,000 pounds of frozen fish are used every year for feeding our animals
  • 10 pounds of shrimp, clam, and squid are used every day to feed just one of our sea otters
  • 50 husbandry staff members are needed to care for all the animals in our collection
  • More than 475 medical exams are conducted each year

The Aquarium of the Pacific strives every day to provide the best environment for each of our aquatic friends and with over 11,000 animals providing the best care possible comes with a high price tag. The community has also expressed interest in being able to have a more direct way in which to partner with us in the care and feeding of our animals. In response, we have created the Animal Husbandry Fund. The Animal Husbandry Fund will support all the activities vital to the optimal health of our marine residents such as: clams, mussels, and shrimp to feed the sea otters, interactive toys for the Giant Pacific Octopus to keep her mind stimulated and engaged, and medical supplies for the annual exams conducted on all the lorikeets.

To receive more information or make a donation to the Animal Husbandry Fund please call (562) 951-1605.

The Aquarium of the Pacific has been “instilling a sense of wonder, respect and stewardship for the Pacific Ocean, its inhabitants and ecosystems” since 1998. Through a variety of inspirational public lectures, engaging k-12 educational programs, and over 500 species of very special animal ambassadors, the Aquarium has become a true community resource for all those looking for the most up-to-date information on our shared environment, engaging and interactive animal experiences and opportunities for scientific learning that transcend the traditional classroom.

Did you also know that the Aquarium of the Pacific is a non-profit institution? Ticket sales and gift shop revenues only cover 75% of our annual operating costs. The contributions we receive from our donor community truly do make a tremendous difference in ensuring we are able to continue to provide the quality, mission-driven experiences our guests have come to expect from the Aquarium. From purchasing interactive toys for our sea otters to creating new state standards-based classroom experiences for our neighborhood school children, every dollar received has impact. And, every dollar counts. Please take a moment to explore the many ways, both large and small, that you can help your Aquarium found on the links to the left. This Aquarium was formed through a partnership with our community, and we hope to continue this powerful partnership with you for many years to come.
