Pacific Currents Fall 2011

Climate, Carbon, and the Ocean

Most of our energy use results in carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to climate change. Some of this carbon dioxide is also absorbed by the ocean and could cause lasting changes to ocean chemistry and biology.

In this issue, read about how climate change and ocean acidification are affecting marine animals and habitats. Learn more about California’s water supply and how it could be impacted by climate change. Aquarium news highlights include an update on the Marine Science Academy, our assistant dive safety officer’s participation in a groundbreaking study, and two new exhibits opening this fall, including an exhibit of aerial photographs of the Gulf of Mexico taken in the aftermath of the April 2010 oil spill. Kids Corner features a craft that teaches kids about the pH scale, with instructions for creating your own pH indicator with cabbage juice. Conservation Corner features ideas for green home improvement.
