Ocean Exploration for Scientific Research

Canceled - Dr. Timothy Shank

Due to unforeseen circumstances, this lecture has been canceled. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Dr. Timothy Shank is an associate scientist in the Marine Biology Department at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. In his presentation he will discuss the importance of ocean exploration for scientific research, making discoveries that improve our understanding of life on our planet, establishing baselines for understanding how natural and human-caused changes impact ocean systems, and determining the underwater borders of our country through extended continental shelf mapping.

He will explain how the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is working with public, private, and non-governmental organizations to develop a national ocean exploration program. This program will take advantage of existing technologies and promote development of new technologies and resources for science and public education.
