While deep sea exploration has advanced considerably in recent decades thanks to technological innovations, the voyage to the deep sea is still a challenging experience. New and more capable autonomous underwater robots or drones are developed every year to reduce the barrier to access the deep ocean. Technology start-up Seatrec has developed a new clean power generation technology that can convert temperature differences in the ocean into electricity. With Seatrec power systems, underwater drones can have unlimited endurance, enabling scientists, policymakers, and the general public to better explore the ocean, one of Earth’s last unexplored frontiers. Seatrec’s energy harvesting technology was developed at the California Institute of Technology and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Seatrec founder and CEO Dr. Yi Chao has worked at JPL for over twenty years on a number of research projects related to ocean sciences.
