Rigs to Reefs

Amber Jackson & Emily Callahan

Amber Jackson and Emily Callahan, graduate students at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, will discuss the Rigs to Reefs initiative and its aims to create a healthy relationship between offshore oil and gas development and ocean resource conservation.

Jackson and Callahan conduct dives on oil platforms off the coast of California and in the Gulf of Mexico to document the ecosystems that grow on and around the platforms. Through this study, they are working to help the public make informed and responsible decisions regarding the ocean and its resources.

Jackson is an oceanographer, conservation biologist, explorer, and former oceans curator for Google in partnership with the Sylvia Earle Alliance. Callahan is an oceanographer, explorer, and environmental scientist. In 2011 she worked in the Gulf of Mexico under contract with British Petroleum to analyze the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
