Aquarium Aviculturist Sara Mandel will share her experiences working in South Africa with the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds, which conducts rescue, rehabilitation, and release of ill, injured, abandoned, and oiled seabirds. During her time in South Africa, Mandel assisted with rearing abandoned African penguin eggs and chicks for eventual release back into the wild. She has worked extensively with the Aquarium’s Magellanic penguins since the June Keyes Penguin Habitat opened in 2012 and has raised thirteen penguins that have hatched here.
