NASA Teacher Workshop
Scientists are collecting data about our planet and ocean at a rate that was never before possible. These data collections allow us to know more about our planet, and its subtle changes over time. The story of our earth observing system is more than just satellites. It includes buoys, gliders, data tags, and more. With this two day workshop, 5th-12th grade teachers will be introduced to Our Instrumented Earth and new and exciting ways to bring data into the classroom.
Workshop activities will be held at the Aquarium of the Pacific and at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) in Pasadena. While at the Aquarium, teachers will be the Aquarium’s six foot spherical display called Science On a Sphere®. The sphere will be used to convey earth systems content, data visualizations, false color images, and multiple films. Resources for finding and collecting data with students will also be presented.
Key to the teacher workshop is the Aquarium’s partnership with University of California at Irvine (UCI) Center for Hydrologic Modeling and UCI Department of Earth System Science, which will connect teachers to data from the GRACE mission. Using GRACE as a case study of how data is collected, analyzed, and used, teachers will feel more comfortable with the resources available through NASA instruments. Teachers will take on the role of researchers by modeling raw data, noticing anomalies, mapping trends, looking for oscillations and observing earth systems.
Participants will also have an exclusive tour of JPL facilities. This tour may include walking and stairs along the route.
As a follow-up to the October workshop, participants will invite their students and school communities to a NASA Night event at the Aquarium. Through this free event will have the opportunity to view Our Instrumented Earth film, interact with Aquarium educators through guided interpretations on the Science On a Sphere®, and be introduced to scientists, grad students, and PhD candidates working in the field of earth systems science.
Participants must provide their own transportation to JPL on Saturday October 17, and will need to bring a laptop with Excel software. Current, government-issued photo ID is required for entry to the JPL campus. More information will be provided in pre-workshop email communications.
