In the same way that the architecture of the Aquarium of the Pacific evokes the undulating rhythm of ocean swells, George Crumb’s Voice of the Whale for flute, cello and piano was inspired by the songs of the humpback whale. The LBSO Chamber Players will take us on an oceanic voyage with a vivid collection of sounds: the screech of the seagull, the splash of primeval ocean waves, and the songlike whisper of the mighty whale itself. Also on the program is Camille Saint-Saëns’ beloved Carnival of the Animals performed here in the original chamber version for two pianos, string quintet, flute, clarinet and percussion. This will be accompanied by a reading of the humorous poems of Ogden Nash.
