Deepwater Exploration of South Coast Marine Protected Areas

Dirk Rosen

Some scientists and policymakers see marine protected areas (MPAs) as being amongst the best options for preserving the health of fisheries, many of which are crucially threatened. Deepwater monitoring and assessment are critical tools in the stewardship of MPAs. In his lecture, Dirk Rosen will describe a typical cruise day and share film clips showing the launch of a remotely operated vehicle and footage from MPA sites. He will also explain how he selects sites, plans transects, and processes video into fish maps and densities. Finally, he will discuss removal of derelict fishing gear, the use of sonar to measure fish, and development of the Rapid Assessment Towfish tool.

Rosen is the founder and president of Marine Applied Research and Exploration (MARE). He has more than twenty-five years of design, build, and operations experience with remotely operated vehicles and manned submersibles. He has led seventeen remotely operated vehicle surveys assessing MPAs, exploring deepwater National Marine Sanctuary sites, and evaluating the impacts of fishing gear. Rosen founded MARE in 2003 as a not-for-profit research organization to apply underwater technologies with science to answer marine ecosystem questions. He currently serves as the engineering reviewer for California’s Resources Agency Sea Grant Advisory Panel.
