Somerville is a distinguished professor emeritus at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. He earned his Ph.D. from New York University and has received awards for both his research and his popular book, The Forgiving Air: Understanding Environmental Change. He was a coordinating lead author in Working Group I for the 2007 Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
