The Department of Defense controls and conserves over 30 million acres of land for military training and readiness. These lands are also home to over 350 endangered or threatened species. Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach is a local example of how the military achieves a balance of military readiness and conservation. Robert Schallmann has served as the conservation program manager at the station since 2003 and is responsible for overseeing the natural resources program, including the management of several endangered, threatened, and at-risk species. This presentation will provide an overview of how the military’s natural resources programs meet this challenge, while highlighting the successes and opportunities for conservation in our backyard.
