Facilities Technician - Electrician
full time, eligible for benefits
The facilities department is currently looking for an electrician who is a skilled generalist, performing at a journey-level in one trade (electrical) with strong skills in other trades. The skills to be considered are mechanical/machinery repair, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry and general fabrication. Aquarium facilities technicians perform a variety of skilled preventive and general maintenance, repair, construction and renovation work to the facility and systems.
Essential Functions
- Perform daily inspections/rounds of all facilities equipment
- Perform preventive/routine maintenance of all facilities equipment
- Install, modify, troubleshoot and repair electrical/mechanical equipment throughout the facility
- Interface and communicate successfully with coworkers and members of other departments within the Aquarium
- Provide daily technical support to the husbandry staff as needed to ensure a healthy environment for the animal collection
Knowledge and Skills
- Working knowledge of materials, methods, equipment and tools in related trade areas pertaining to facilities, systems, construction and renovation
- Thorough knowledge of generally accepted trade practices in trade specialties
- Working knowledge or the ability to learn computerized maintenance and building automation systems
- Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes and regulations pertaining to facilities, systems and renovations
- Must be able to demonstrate journey-level skill in one trade and strong skills in other applicable trades
- Ability to use typical power tools and equipment associated with the trades
- Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications
- Ability to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems
- Willingness to work weekends on a rotating basis and off-hours as needed
- Ability to provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants
- Ability to analyze and respond to emergencies
- Ability to use considerable judgment and discretion in performing duties, with a constant awareness of safety and all regulations pertaining thereto
Qualifications
- Minimum of four years hands-on facilities or combination of facilities and life support experience
- Minimum of two years journey-level experience as an electrician is required
- Certificate of completion for a program in HVAC, machinery repair or any other related trade is highly desirable
Physical Demands
- Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds
- Must be able to complete all required safety training related to the job duties
Work Environment
- Must be able to work in an industrial environment, including areas with low headroom, difficult access areas, heights and confined spaces
- Must be able to work around and use hazardous chemicals with proper PPE
