Education Associate
approx 25-30+ hours/week
$11.50/hour
The education associate is responsible for conducting and teaching marine education programs (pre-K to adult) that support the Aquarium of the Pacific and its mission. The person in this position will implement the Aquarium's existing educational programs and may assist in the development of new programming. Primary responsibilities of this position include teaching school and family programs, overnights, Aquarium on Wheels community outreach programs, leading tours, and performing presentations. The person in this position will provide the highest level of customer service to our guests, community and professional peers while instilling a sense of wonder, respect and stewardship for the Pacific Ocean, its ecosystems, and inhabitants.
Essential Functions
- Teach the Aquarium of the Pacific's education programs that support the institutional mission and strategic plan.
- Maintain the highest level of customer service to program participants and Aquarium guests.
- Ability to work well with others in a team atmosphere.
- Safe demonstration of animal handling and appropriate care.
- Keep track of supplies and make recommendations to the education manager when purchases are necessary.
- Maintain a clean teaching space to facilitate programs and presentations in a safe environment for staff, volunteers, and guests.
- Demonstrate creativity and flexibility in completing tasks, which may extend after normal working hours and/or to weekends and holidays.
- Job functions may be subject to change but new responsibilities should be greeted with a positive attitude.
- All other projects as assigned.
Knowledge & Skills
- Maintain a high level of knowledge and expertise in ecological, biological and conservation principles.
- Strong background and training in the field of education and the implementation of informal education programs.
- Familiarity with effective instructional strategies for informal education to a variety of ages and abilities.
- Strong communication skills to transmit information to staff, volunteers, visitors and program participants with enthusiasm.
- Interact with other zoos, aquariums and informal education centers regarding related programs.
- Desire to instill a sense of wonder, respect and stewardship for the Pacific Ocean its ecosystems and inhabitants.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in marine science, biology, or related field preferred or equivalent experience. Candidates working towards their degree will be considered.
- Experience teaching in a formal and/or informal setting.
- Valid California driver's license.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Stand for long periods of time.
