The media relations coordinator will work with the director of public relations and communications manager in supporting the overall Public Relations departmental goals.
The Media Relations Coordinator’s Responsibilities Include:
- Developing and pitching press releases with tailored story angles to maximize media coverage (English and Spanish)
- Answering and responding to incoming calls and e-mails to the PR department, including requests for media tickets, filming, images, press release, and interviews
- Coordinating and staffing onsite and offsite film/photo shoots and media interviews
- Assisting in developing PR contracts, including image releases and trade agreements
- Creating memos to send to staff regarding press events and interviews
- Expanding, updating, and changing the Aquarium’s media database as necessary
- Organizing and implementing the Aquarium’s press mailings
- Researching and writing speaking points for interviews and speeches
- Assisting with planning and staffing of press conferences and marketing events
- Using Excel to log media coverage and PR expenses spreadsheets
- Assisting with Hispanic research, marketing, and event planning
- Helping in the creation of and maintaining Aquarium Spanish social media, including Twitter
- Assisting with Spanish translations
Qualifications
- BA in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing or related field or equivalent experience
- Over one year of experience in PR, marketing, journalism or related field
- Must be able to work flexible hours, which vary depending on breaking news and other events, and could include evenings, early mornings, weekends, and over 40 hours per week
- Interest in marine life, nature, or environmental conservation
- Strong verbal communication skills in English and Spanish

- Excellent writing and proof-reading abilities in English and Spanish
- Ability to produce quality work under tight and constantly changing deadlines
- Ability to work well with both external and internal audiences and build lasting relationships
- Detail-oriented individual able to multitask in a fast-paced work environment
- Knowledge of the Southern California media market
- Knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Cisionpoint and Vocus a plus
- A team player and driven self-starter who is able to contribute creative and innovative ideas that will benefit the PR department as well as the organization as a whole
