Education Associate

PART-TIME, 25–30 HOURS/WEEK; $14.25/HOUR

The Educational Associate is responsible for teaching marine education programs (pre-K to adult) that support the Aquarium of the Pacific and its mission. The individual will implement the Aquarium’s existing educational programs which include family programs, sleepover programs, community and school outreach programs, tours, school programs, camps, and shows. The individual will provide the highest level of customer service to guests, community and professional peers while instilling a sense of wonder, respect, and stewardship for the Pacific Ocean, its ecosystems, and inhabitants. The Education Associate position is not entry-level; this position is considered a career-track position in the field of informal education.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Teach a wide variety of Aquarium of the Pacific’s education programs
  • Maintain the highest level of customer service to program participants and Aquarium guests
  • Assist guests with touching animal at specific exhibits both onsite and on the Aquarium on Wheels mobile tidepool
  • Communicate constructively and effectively with other Aquarium team members
  • Maintain a clean teaching space for programs and presentations
  • Demonstrate creativity and flexibility in approach to teaching practice
  • Works as a team player and problem-solver
  • All other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in marine science, biology, or related field preferred or equivalent experience (Individuals working toward their degree may also be considered)
  • A minimum of 6 months experience teaching learners (children and/or adults) in either a formal or informal setting
  • Valid California driver’s license

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Knowledgeable in ecological, biological, and conservation principles
  • Knowledge of effective instructional strategies for informal education to a variety of ages and abilities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience speaking in public on microphone and/or to large audiences

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to sit, stand and walk for long periods of time
  • Ability to balance, bend, squat, climb, kneel, crawl, twist
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 0-50lbs
  • Ability to pull and push up to 0-100lbs
  • Full functional range of motion in all major body joints from reaching, twisting, bending, simple and power gripping, fine and gross motor skills
  • Ability to function while on board a mid-sized ocean vessel

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Aquarium galleries, classrooms, theater and informal learning environment
  • Offsite areas conducting programs as needed
  • Outside environments in varying weather conditions
  • Open ocean environments
  • Exposure to various in temperature, humidity or wetness
  • Wet, dirty, uneven surfaces and walkways
  • Exposure to confined spaces
