2008 Boeing Teacher Institute: Exploring California Marine Life

Join us for a week of hands-on learning and discovery in the Aquarium of the Pacific’s Boeing Teacher Institute, August 25th - 29th, 2008. Throughout the week, participants will receive an intensive introduction to the Aquarium, marine biology and Southern California’s diverse marine life, habitats and ecosystems. Guided tours, standards-based activities and field trips to such locales as Santa Catalina Island will provide teachers with an up close look at California marine life. Each participant will also receive their very own aquarium complete with filtration and a guidebook on how to incorporate aquariums into their curriculum. For K-12th grade teachers, and it’s FREE! Educator Pre-Visits

To help you prepare for your visit, participate in one of our free educator pre-visits. This tour will give you a chance to see the Aquarium before bringing your students. Our education staff will point out everything that you need to know, from bathrooms and lunch areas to programs and cool exhibits. You will be more prepared (and more relaxed) during your visit. Teacher Workshops - Pacific Adventures

Want to learn a little more about the Pacific Ocean and its inhabitants? The Aquarium of the Pacific is proud to offer its newest teacher workshop, Pacific Adventures. Through in-depth tours, activities and classroom exploration, you will gain a better appreciation for the animals that call the Pacific their home. Learn ways to integrate marine science into your curriculum and take back a handful of standards-based activities to use in the classroom. Pricing for Teacher Workshops is $300 for up to 25 teachers, $10 for each additional teacher over 25. Book your reservation today at (562) 951-1630.

Learning Ocean Science Through Ocean Exploration Professional Development

We know more about the moon than we do about the ocean. Bring the excitement of current ocean science discoveries to your students using Ocean Exploration curriculum and Ocean Explorer web-site. Join Valerie Chase, biologist and science education consultant as we do inquiry and standard-based activities tied directly to ocean expeditions. Use these activities in biology, earth, physical, and marine science courses to connect your students to the excitement of expeditions from the Arctic Circle to the Galapagos, from Alaska to the Hawaiian Islands.

Registration will be limited to 30 participants per session. This course is free, and in addition, you will receive a $100 stipend, breakfast, an edition of the curriculum with CD-ROMS, certificates of participation, professional development credits and more!

Teachers Open House

The Aquarium of the Pacific invites Southland teachers for a special complimentary evening with Aquarium educators to discover tips on incorporating marine science education in the classroom. Teachers will have the opportunity to meet with the Aquarium’s education staff in the Boeing Learning Center and Honda Theater to observe both classroom and theater presentations offered at the Aquarium to advance students’ knowledge of marine biology in a fun and interactive learning environment. The Aquarium will also display the “Aquarium on Wheels,” and discuss this outreach program.Teachers will receive 20 percent off on all books in the Aquarium’s Pacific Collections gift store.
