Vintage Sea Lion Enrichment

Hugh's Aquarium Views Video Number 61

Back in 2006 the mammal staff put together an enrichment puzzle tube for Parker the sea lion using left over parts from the life support department and the aquarists. The short tube was capped at both ends and had a fish sized hole cut into one end. The sea lion had to figure out how to angle and move the tube using his flippers and nose so that the fish would exit through the hole.

This vintage video from that period shows how much Parker enjoyed trying to solve the puzzle. It was also fun for us to watch him play with the tube.

To this day the husbandry staff is continuously coming up with new ways to entertain the critters under their care.
