Troy’s Rubber Ducky Retrieval

Hugh's Aquarium Views Video Number 72

Retrievals act as both a physical exercise behavior that helps keep our critters fit, and is also a fun activity that is mentally stimulating for the animal.

It was the first sunny Saturday in weeks here in Long Beach so I figured it would be a good time for Troy the harbor seal and I to have a little fun in the sun. Namely a session of toy retrievals.

Retrieving toys tossed into the water is a great mental exercise for a seal. Where did he toss it? Can I hold it in my mouth? Should I push it back with my nose?

It allows the animal to analyze the situation for the most efficient solution to the asked behavior, stimulating the seal’s mind.

Check out this week’s video and watch Troy the seal retrieve a rubber ducky and other toys.
